Alcudia and Playa de Muro Guide. The beach resort & old town in Mallorca
|
 |
 |
The beach resort of Alcudia and the old town merge in the northernmost tip of Mallorca to give one of the largest beaches of the island. Spreading from the Port of Alcudia to the adjoining C'an Picafort resort there are more than 10km (6 miles) of golden sand.
At various points on the beach are small bar/restaurants, actually situated on the sand and offering a wide range of drinks, snacks
and meals.
The stunning panoramic views, combined with shallow waters, provide an ideal family holiday resort. A large range of water sports
are available, including sailing, windsurfing and scuba diving.
The usual sunbeds and pedalloes are available for hire.
|
The resort offers bars and restaurants from a variety of cultures, The British area being mainly situated near the large and popular
Bellvue Complex.
The old town is approximately 2 miles inland and was the capital of Mallorca in Roman times, although originally dating back even
further to the Phoenician and Greek times. A new city was built on the Roman site by the Moors, the medieval walls and gates being added
after the Spanish conquest in 1229.
Today the area within the town walls still contains many ancient mansions, many of which now are the home of shops, cafes and
"tapas" bars. Entry is via the "Portal del Moll", the ancient gateway from the port.
The tourist office arranges guided walks around places of interest, starting at the Town Hall. Telephone 971 892659 for more
details.
In addition there are several local fiestas held throughout the year.
The nearby resort of Playa de Muro, which is on the outskirts of Alcudia, is slightly more up market. |

Alcudia has it's own fiestas, starting on the 17th January
with the festival of the patron saint of animals, Sant
Antoni Abat. Residents light fires and roast "botifarrons",
sitting around the fires and singing traditional songs. The
following day there is a parade, with residents bringing
their pets, followed by the blessing of the animals outside
the local church.
January 20th brings the festival of Sant Sebastia, with a
statue of the saint being decorated with orange blossom
then paraded through the town.
In June, on the 29th, it is the turn of the patron saint of
sailors, Saint Peter. Numerous boats, all decorated for the
event, escort a statue of the saint around the bay, with
various other events, musical and otherwise, occuring
throughout the day.
Starting July 25th is a week of fiesta celebrating the patron saint of Alcudia, Saint James. There are live music events, open air dancing and religious celebrations.
On August 24th the children of Alcudia parade the streets carrying Chinese lanterns carved from melons for the fiesta Les Llanternes.
Towards the end of the season an agricultaral fair, the "Fira", takes place during the first week of October.

Playa de Muro, also known as Platja de Muro, is a new
resort which has sprung up between C'an Picafort and Alcudia in the centre of the Bay of Alcudia.
The main tourist attraction is the nature reserve at
S'Albufera, a wetlands reserve with many species of birds
and plants.
Playa de Muro accommodation consists mainly of 4 and 5
star hotels so expect to pay a little more than you would
in neighbouring Alcudia.
The resort is quite remote, although close to the larger
neighbouring towns, and public transport is limited. A
walk into Alcudia could take a few hours along a busy
main road, something to take into consideration if you are
looking for a lively holiday.
The main attraction is the direct access to 8km of sandy
beach with its range of water sports and other facilities.
