Arenal on the South coast of Mallorca
Arenal, in the south of Mallorca near to the airport, is also known as El Arenal.
It lies at the east end of a long beach which starts at C'an Pastilla, continues through Playa de Palma and ends with Arenal.
The resorts are joined together by a wide promenade which runs the whole length of the beach, with little traffic and a mini train which drives up and down throughout the day.
The beach, which has been cleaned up in recent years, is wide, gently sloping into the sea, making it ideal for families with young children.
The beach front promenade is lined with bars, restaurants, shops and hotels. Here you can also rent a car, push bike or change your money. On the beach there are sun beds, pedaloes and umbrellas for hire.
Over the years these resorts have expanded so much that it is difficult to work out where one ends and the other starts.
Arenal was a popular resort with the British in the 70's, then unfortunately become rather dilapidated and run down. For several years now the area has become extremely popular with the German tourists, especially during the peak season when Arenal becomes the German equivalent to Magaluf for the Brits.
More recently the local council have been attempting to clean up the area and things are rapidly improving, now attracting a lot of Spanish and Dutch in addition to the German and British market
Nightlife is busy with many bars and clubs, not a resort to choose in peak season if you are looking for a quiet holiday or have young children as it can be noisy until the early hours.
There are various excursions by glass bottom boat and at the east end of the resort you will find the marina, Club Nautico El Arenal.
