C'an Picafort, Mallorca. A resort guide from AroundMallorca

beach at Can Picafort mallorca Originally a small fishing village, C'an Picafort is now a thriving resort. Situated on the north coast of Mallorca it has a long sandy beach which stretches from the marina all the way west to the Port of Alcudia.

Boat trips are available from the marina and the usual facilities of water-skiing, pedalo hire and windsurfing are available.

In addition, to the east there is the small beach of Son Baulo and to the west the quieter beach of Playa de Muro.

The town itself offers a large variety of cafes, bars and restaurants. In addition to the local and British aimed custom, there is a large emphasis on German and Scandinavian foods and beers. The resort is very popular with German tourists and certain restaurants do not provide a menu in English, preferring to aim for a different clientele. Other bars and restaurants are clearly aimed at solely the British, and there are many British owned bars in the area.

Live entertainment is limited, although most hotels provide a good variety, and there are only two night clubs in the resort.

 How to get there

The Son Sant Joan International airport near Palma de Mallorca is easily accesible by car and there are numerous car hire firms which will arrange for your car to be waiting for your arrival. The motorway north has recently been extended and goes almost all the way up to Alcudia, where you take the coast road east to C'an Picafort. There is a route through the countryside once you reach Inca if you prefer. The journey takes about an hour.

Coach transfer can take up to 2 hours depending on other drop off points.

Taxi ranks outside the airport are another, although expensive, alternative. There is a fixed price for the journey, depending on the time of day, and you may have to pay extra for each piece of luggage. For those with children requiring car seats it is probably better to pre-book a taxi, specifying your requirements.

There are numerous fiestas throughout the year in and around Mallorca. Some are celebrated throughout the island, whereas others are specific to a particular town or area.

Many of these fiestas are to pay hommage to various saints. Others are pagan feasts dating back to the various nationalities which have invaded the island over the years, for example the Moors and Christians celebration where locals re-enact the invasion. Some are celebrations of ancient sports.
  • 1st of January New year
  • 6th of January Feast of Epiphany
  • 1st of April Maundy Thursday
  • 2nd of April Good Friday
  • 1st of May May Day
  • 25th of July San Jaime

  • 26th of December Boxing Day
In C'an Picafort there is an additional celebration which is rather strange. Known as the "Fiesta of the ducks" it attracts approximately 3,000 visitors each year, despite the fact that it is deemed illegal! The local council incur fines by the government every year but this does not stop the event from happening.
The start is outside of the Hotel Sol y Mar shortly after noon, when five boats carrying 350 or so ducks drop anchor and release the ducks! The idea is for people to enter the water and capture the ducks as prizes. Obviously among the following mayhem many ducks escape, whilst those captured are normally released in the Torrent de Son Baulo, although some may end up on the dinner table. The fun continues, ending with a spectacular firework display at midnight.
