Whether you are travelling to Mallorca for a holiday or have plans to live on the island, or set up business, then the appropriate insurance should be set up to cover all eventualities.
It is worth knowing statistics reveal that travellers have a 50% chance of falling ill either through minor ailments or something more serious.

Before setting off for your holiday in Mallorca it is advisable that you take out full travel insurance. This is important even if you have a European Health Insurance card (E.H.I.C.) The E.H.I.C. card on its own may not cover all of your medical costs and as a rule private treatment is not covered at all.

Travel insurance should cover you for all eventualities including:
- Medical and Health cover for any injury or sudden illness whilst in Mallorca.
- The cost of accommodation to stay with a sick or injured person who is unable to fly home. This is not covered by your E.H.I.C. card.
- The cost of an alternative flight back to your home country when the sick or injured person is able to travel.
- Repatriation, which includes the cost of an air ambulance to your home country. Again this is not covered by your E.H.I.C. card.
- 24 hour multilingual emergency service and assistance.
- Personal liability cover – if you accidentally injure a person or damage property.
- Lost or stolen possessions – check the small print for single item limit and total for valuables.
- Cancelling or cutting short your holiday.
|
|
- Personal accident – payments for permanent disablement or death.
- Legal expenses i.e. solicitor fees.
- Travel problems such as delays or missed departures.
- Check to see if you are covered for what are classed as extreme sports – you may need additional cover for scuba diving, sailing etc.
You should ensure that your insurance policy covers you for all the time you are away. You must disclose all pre-existing medical conditions that you or any members of your party included in the policy have.
If you are driving in Mallorca check that your insurance covers you for the duration of your stay.

Many types of insurance may be needed if you live and work in Mallorca.
If you have a business which deals with the public or which the public have access to then by law you need Public Liability Insurance. This protects you from a liability claim if a member of the public is injured on your premises. Building and
Contents Insurance will be needed if you own the property.

For those living in Mallorca it is worth checking out prices for Health insurance.
For those who have previously lived within the E.U. then you should be covered by the local health authority but some prefer the added private insurance for peace of mine.
In certain cases you may be required to take out health insurance when applying for residency.
Household Insurance usually covers the building, contents and Third Party liability. This often doesn’t cover things classified as “Acts of God” – earthquakes, tornadoes etc. There are often mini-tornadoes in Spain – including the Balearics-and is well worth considering extra cover.
If you have a property which you rent out to the public then check with your agent as to any insurance you may require, including public liability insurance.

Car Insurance - no matter where the origin of your vehicle you must have car insurance in Mallorca. If you have a UK or foreign plated vehicle then insurance must be taken out with a relevant company for your region. You cannot use a Spanish company, as all vehicles must be insured in the country in which they are registered according to E.U. regulations. You can de-register in your home country and re-register in Spain if you wish to insure with a Spanish company. This can be a long and expensive business.
