Playa Mago and Portals Vells, Mallorca guide
|
 |
 |
About 4kms south of Magalluf the nudist beach of Playa El Mago and the nearby beaches of Portals Vells are in a secluded spot which is reached by little more than a dirt track which leads past Poniente Golf Course and winds its way to the bays.
Sa Caleta de Portals Vells is 100m wide and 20m long and fairly flat. The water is calm and good for snorkelling or for those with young children. The bay is popular for luxury yachts and boats as a place to moor and swim, so can get busy especially at weekends. The surrounding area is thick with pine trees. To the left are the ruins of the Moro tower, built 1580. |
Sa Platgeta de Portals Vells, the main beach, is easily reached from the car park which is situated behind it. 60m long and 70m wide it is unspoilt with beautiful white sand with cliffs at one edge. To the left is a cave, where legend has it that the image of a virgin was discovered and remained there until the 18th century. The image is now safely kept in the Oratory of Portals Nous.
The rock here was mined and the resulting stone used in the building of Palma Cathedral and Santa Eulalia church.
There is an excellent restaurant on the beach, the seafood dishes being superb. There is another restaurant if you follow the road round and up to the left. |

The first official nudist beach in Mallorca, Playa el Mago is a small bay, with clear waters and golden sands and rocky sandstone outcrops. The film The Magician, with Anthony Quinn and Candice Bergen, was filmed here in 1967 and some of the remnants from the set are nearby.
From the car park at El Mago, if you take the left path this will bring to to the small Rei beach. The flat sea bed means it is barely 1.5m deep 100m from shore. Surrounding pine trees offer shade at the peak of the day.
An open air bar is available for drinks. |
