Palma de Mallorca. A guide to the capital city of Majorca
Palma de Mallorca is the capital of the Balearic islands.
It is situated in the south of Mallorca, with a fantastic view over Palma Bay.
One of the first things you will see is the fantastic cathedral which dominates the bay. A tribute to gothic architecture the cathedral is open to the public where you can take a tour and visit the museum located in the chapter room.
On leaving the cathedral head for Almudaina Palace, a royal castle and old palace of Muslim governors. From here you can tour the back streets of Palma, which wind around like a maze, featuring many palaces, museums and places of interest.
Visit the Palacio Municipal, a magnificent 17th century palace with marvellous wooden eaves and now the city hall, then the Palacio de la Diputacion right next door, now the home of the Council of Mallorca.
If you want to visit some of the churches then the Gothic church of Santa Eulalia is a good place to start, next to the Calle de la Argenteria (Jewellers' Street), followed by the Convent of St.Clara.
Also worth a visit are the churches of San Francisco, which holds the tomb of Ramon Llull, and San Miguel.
Head up the Passeig de Borne, formerly a jousting field, which leads up to the Placita de la Reina with it's statue of poet Joan Alcover. Here you will also find large department stores such as C&A and H&M.
Head to the right towards the Plaza Mayor, once the offices of the Inquisition and now a lively square with market, arcades and galleries. Stroll along the Paseo de la Rambla with its many flower stalls and fountain. On the corner opposite the Plaza Mayor is the Teatro Municipal which hosts plays and an opera season. |
