 Top 5 American Road Trips

road trips America's roads, from the open freeway of Route 66, to the dusty pioneer trails, are iconic and take in some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. With more cheap transatlantic flights to the US becoming available, the weak dollar, and a wide range of low cost accommodation, from hostels to motels, it's becoming easier to travel to America on a budget.

Americans may moan about the price of gas, but compared to the UK, prices are still comparatively cheap and the roads are far less stressful to navigate than anywhere in Europe.

Forget crowded motorways and hairpin turns, America's roads promise excellent views of mountain ranges, vast lakes and sparse desert from your passenger seat.

If you are short on time, try americansky.co.uk, or Jetsave for coach tours that pack in as many sights into your trip as possible. For car hire, most mainland airports carry outlets for the main hire companies Dollar, Hertz and Avis, or try booking online with Holiday Autos.com and choose your car before you go. Whether you want to recreate your own version of literary classics such as 'On The Road' and 'Lolita', stopping off at motels and diners across the land, or want to explore real backwater country, here are some of the best road trips around America.

  4. Route 66: It takes about two weeks to drive this iconic route through America, but it's a great way to pack in some of the country's greatest hits.
