It's not hard to see why Mallorca is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world. Beautiful white-sand beaches and a host of historical and cultural delights combine with cheap hotels, low living costs and cheap flights to create the perfect tourist trap.
With budget airlines like Fly Monarch serving the island and travel websites like lastminute.com offering cheap package deals, holidays to Mallorca are also simple to organise.
So where on this idyllic island should you spend your holiday? Here are a few of the best resort towns.
C'an Pastilla
One of the first Mallorcan towns to become popular among tourists, C'an Pastilla benefits from being one of the most accessible resorts on the island. It is located right next to Palma's international airport, and has a stunning beach with plenty of umbrellas and sunloungers. Although C'an Pastilla is largely family-orientated and therefore quieter in the evenings, the neighbouring resort of El Arenal provides all the nightlife you could ever want.
During the day, lounge in the shade of one of the town's many beach huts, with their snack kiosks, showers and toilet facilities, or wander down to the charming marina to check out the windsurfers. Children will adore the huge waterpark at El Arenal, which also features a mini golf course, jeep safaris and cruises, while adults can take Mallorca's most popular hiking trail from the nearby town of Alaro up to a ruined castle and hilltop chapel, which offers panoramic views over the sea and across the island to Palma.
Palma
Mallorca's capital is far enough removed from the beach resorts to have retained its traditional Spanish feel. It is focussed around a busy centre, with a myriad of shopping centres, boutiques and narrow lanes, and gains an historical charm from the many restored ancient buildings, Moorish architecture and ruined city walls. Visitors can enjoy exploring the old quarter, which is dotted with friendly cafes and tapas bars, or hire a car and drive to one of the nearby beaches.
Calas de Mallorca
Located on Mallorca's east coast, this busy resort is set on a cliff top and enjoys fabulous views of the sea. Prime attractions include one of the island's most famous beaches, Playa Domingos, as well as numerous bars, restaurants, supermarkets, clubs and tourist shops. Neighbouring attractions include the Caves of Drach, a small aquarium, the Mallorca Pearl Factory in Manacor and several fun parks.
