 Island activities

When you think of Mallorca you probably imagine the classic resort destination -hot sun, lapping waves, and sandy beaches where you can kick back, relax and forget about the world.

If you fancy a chilled-out break then there's no doubt that Mallorca has what you're looking for, but the island also has another side. When you get tired of lying on the beach, here are a few ways to get your adrenaline racing again.

Walking and hiking
Away from the resort towns, Mallorca has tracts of incredibly beautiful countryside. The varied scenery ranges from dramatic mountain peaks to rolling dunes, and the relative seclusion of many of the paths has led to the island being dubbed a 'walker's paradise'. Outside of July and August, the weather is generally warm but pleasant - perfect for a gentle stroll or even a strenuous hike. If you're looking for the latter, head to one of Mallorca's two mountain ranges: the Sierra de Tramuntana in the northwest and the Sierra de Levante in the east. Both offer diverse walks and fantastic views across the island to the sea.

Water sports
If your family are refusing to leave the beach, there's another way to get your pulse pumping and see Mallorca's other side. The island is a popular water sport destination, with water skiing, wind surfing, kite surfing and canoeing all taking place on its many beaches. Don't worry if you're a beginner - most resorts have windsurfing schools and equipment rental centres, with the majority of sporting teaching concentrated around the beaches of Alcudia, Muro, Ca'n Pastilla and Pollenca. You can also enjoy diving at a new centre at Port de Soller in the northwest of the island.

Rock climbing
There are plenty of places around Mallorca where you can enjoy climbing, and many of them offer fabulous views as well as great sport. The island caters for all levels, with short mid-grad walls of rock giving way to tough routes set against majestic cliff faces. The majority of climbing can be found on the northwest side of the island, within easy driving distance of Palma, but there are also possibilities in the north and the west.

If you're taking part in adventure activities when you visit Mallorca, make sure you take out the right level of travel insurance. Let your provider know your intentions before leaving to ensure that you are given the right type of cover, and search around to get the best quote for you. Good places to start include the websites of AA Travel insurance and Go Travel insurance.
