Excursions around the island
|
 |
If you're keen to combine a beach break with some fun exploration adventures then Mallorca is the perfect location.
The island features hundreds of resort towns, miles of sandy beaches and an attractive interior with plenty to see. It's also easy to arrange car hire in the region, with companies like Holiday Autos offering pick-up and drop-off services at Palma International Airport.
Public transport is limited, so if you're keen to explore uninhibited then it's worth looking in to hiring a vehicle. Make sure overseas travel is included in your car insurance - if not, shop around with companies like Co-operative Insurance to find a cheap deal.
Once you've arranged your transport, here are a few of the best Mallorca day trips to include in your itinerary.
Alcudia Old Town
Not to be confused with the modern resort of Alcudia, the Old Town is a beautiful Second Century Roman capital with a fascinating history. It was originally settled by the Phoenicians and the Greeks, who were superseded by the Romans before the town was overrun by the Vandals in the sixth century. The Moors rebuilt Alcudia, resulting in several beautiful examples of Moorish architecture, and it finally became a part of Spain in the early 1200s when liberated by King Jaime I. Visitors will appreciate the pretty narrow streets, ancient churches and the well-preserved Roman amphitheatre.
Arta
Located on the east coast of Mallorca, the ancient hilltop town of Arta has been occupied for over 3,000 years. Today, tourists can visit the nearby Bronze Age settlement at Ses Paisses, wander through beautiful olive groves and oak avenues, and admire the surrounding countryside from the Santuari de Sant Salvador, the chapel-shrine on top of the hill. If you can, try to visit the town on Tuesdays when a lively market enhances the atmosphere.
Lluc
The remote town of Lluc in the north of Mallorca has been an important place of pilgrimage since the 13th century. It first became a sacred site when a shepherd boy discovered a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary in a rock cleft. The statue was placed in the local church, but returned miraculously to its cave three times before consenting to stay put. Visitors can see the famous statue, which has now been encrusted with precious stones and presides in its own chapel.
