Phoning the UK or Republic of Ireland from Mallorca (Spain)

To telephone the U.K., dial 00 44 then the number you are calling omitting the first 0.

For example, if you are dialling 0191 537 2004, from Mallorca it would be 00 44 191 537 2004.

Minimum charge to the U.K. is €1.80.

The code for the Republic of Ireland is 00 353 followed by the number you are calling.

For calls within Mallorca, all land lines begin with 971. Spanish mobiles begin with a "6" and you simply dial the number, and the minimum charge is €1.00.

To make a reverse charge call to Britain via a British operator dial 900 99 00 44 to connect to British Telecom at no charge.

Moving to Mallorca - Residency & Passport Renewal

It is much easier to become a resident in Mallorca than in previous years. You can live in Mallorca as long as you have a valid European passport.

It is no longer necessary to apply for a Spanish “Residencia” but it is better to do so as it will be useful when dealing with other paperwork.

Non-EU nationals still have to apply for residencia. Check with the appropriate Consulate.

Application for residencia is made using the form which is available from the “Oficina de Extranjeros”. This should be taken to the Policia Nacional in Palma. Also needed is your passport, a photocopy of your passport and 3 passport size photographs.

Once you have become resident it is necessary to enter on the Municipal Register (Padron Municipal), known as “empadronamiento”, at your local town hall. This certificate is needed for several reasons, from claiming discount on internal flights and ferries to getting married in Mallorca.

If your passport runs out whilst you are in Mallorca you need to apply for a new one from the Consulate in Madrid. The British Consulate in Mallorca cannot issue 10 year passports.

You can get the application form online here

To be sent to:
Passport Section
British Consulate-General Madrid
Paseo de Recoletos, 7/9
28004 Madrid

Paperwork can be completed and submitted personally. People often employ the services of a local “gestor” to complete the paperwork and do the majority of the legwork.

 Mallorca and Finances

The currency of Mallorca is the Euro.

European residents can open a residents bank account if they are in possession of a current residencia card. If they do not have the card, then a current passport and N.I.E. (Foreigner Identification number) are needed.

The N.I.E. can be applied for at the local police station. You will need your passport, a photocopy and the original, and the completed application form. Proof is needed that you are in Mallorca legally and your reason for applying for your N.I.E.

Visitors can open a non-resident account which must be closed when they become resident.

No restriction is made on importing money into Mallorca, although there is a limit when taking a trip, both in to and out of Spain. Check with individual authorities for formalities applying to them.

There is a double taxation agreement between Spain and Britain so that people do not pay tax in both countries on the same income.

Money matters can become complicated so it is always advisable to take professional advice when dealing with the authorities.

 Medical Treatment in Mallorca

If you are officially resident in Mallorca, a pensioner, or employed in Mallorca, then you qualify for State Health Care in Mallorca and NHS treatment in the UK. A Social Security number card is required and is available from the local “Tesoria de Seguridad Social”.

If you do not qualify for State Health Care then you will require private medical insurance. There are several companies which are accepted in Mallorca, including Bupa and AXA.

European visitors are covered for Emergency State Health Care if they have the relevant documentation from their own country. If they do not qualify then private holiday insurance is needed. Keep all receipts to claim a refund when you return home.

 Schooling and qualifications

Children between the ages of 6 and 16 must go to school when the parents legally reside in Spain. This is free from pre-school up to the age of 18, although it is necessary to buy school books and there are often other costs.

There are private schools available offering English-type education.

Check that they are members of the National Association of British Schools in Spain.

Details of these schools can be obtained from:

British Council
Paseo General Martinez Campos 31
28010 Madrid
Tel: 91 337 35 66/00

Those who are professionally qualified can check that the qualifications are accepted in Mallorca. A list of EU directives on “mutual recognition qualifications” can be obtained from the European Commission.
